Watching for clouds moving either away from or towards Powell River. It turned out to be a calm and sunny four-hour paddle into the marina at the headwaters of the mighty Powell River.

Still Getting Messed W/ By Google Copyright Bot
Okay okay I get it Google Copy Bot, Magnum Photo owns the copyright to Philippe Halsman's portraits . Oh and ALSO THE POSES?!?! WTF
A few weeks ago I posted a recreation of a famous portrait taken in 1951 by Philippe Halsman of Anna Magnani. I also attempted to upload a 400x300 pixel scan of the original. Googles uploading software accepted my photo but rejected the original. Okay fair enough. I would argue that I'm using the image for critical purposes and therefore not infringing on Magnum's copyright. But I didn't think the bot would go as far as to remove my own image as well. What a slight impediment to my self-expression!

Earth's Last Citadel or; Poor Punctuation (and in a title... WTF?!)
Dateline: Vancouver, Summer 2011
A photographer nears the end of his college photography education and reals at the choices that lay before him. He asks a question,
"What is this?"
Strobist Notes®
Big white nylon scrims, sb-600, sb-700 (commander), Stock Photo (from google image search), Dwarven Forge Miniature, Dry Ice, Etc. Etc
All joking aside, I created this image for a class I just finished at Langara College called Commercial Production. Probably one of the best courses I've taken yet at that wonderful institution (no japes). Small class, LOTS OF WORK, knowledgeable instructor; this class is serious.
This image is a photographic reinterpretation of a sci-fi paperback illustration titled "Earth's Last Citadel" written by wife and husband (equality) duo C.L. Moore and Henry Kuttner (respectively).
Here's the original:...

My Own Photograph - Peter Onyschuk, 2011 |
I tried uploading a copy of the original, but since it's copyright is held by Magnum Photo Google's server wont let me upload it. I'll try scanning the copy I have in a book and uploading it later this week, but I'm starting to wonder if this is a watermark issue or Google's new image search engine being smart and Orwellian. BECAUSE THAT'S SHITTY! This blog is not a commercial venture. I don't make ANY money from it's content, so why shouldn't I be able to honour a photograph I'm referencing by posting a small, heavily watermarked version of it.

Siblings Portraits

Brothers #1, 2011 |
Took this portrait of Ed Pien and his brother Dave when they were visiting Vancouver late last month. We had dinner at The Reef on Main St. and dessert at Sweet Revenge also on Main. I wanted to do a quick picture of them in "Golden Hour" sunlight, but we ate for too long and buildings got in the way of the sunset. So I chose this very attractive backdrop and took a shot anyways. Thanks Dave and Ed!
I would love to do more sibling portraits. Got a sibling and want a portrait? Email me.
