Brothers #1, 2011

Took this portrait of Ed Pien and his brother Dave when they were visiting Vancouver late last month. We had dinner at The Reef on Main St. and dessert at Sweet Revenge also on Main. I wanted to do a quick picture of them in "Golden Hour" sunlight, but we ate for too long and buildings got in the way of the sunset. So I chose this very attractive backdrop and took a shot anyways. Thanks Dave and Ed!

Grand Parents

This is a photo of my Dad's Mom and Dad. I love this photo. It's perfectly dated and timeless at once, a photo of two loving happy people, awkward and confident. This to me is pure portraiture from a period when subjects and photographers were more reverent of the process. It's crazy to me that this party pic says so much to me about these two people. One of the saddest things in my life (so far) is that I never met them. When my dad was in his 20's he started making some good money and bought his parents plane tickets to some sunny destination. On the way to the airport they were hit by a drunk driver and both died.

Grrrr....

Losing my grip on posting. Wanted to roar into april and do 15 for the month. Haven't. Done. One. Yet.  I have however been doing some work for a little Sunday project I call Corporate Ladder™. 
Here's a Photograph of my mother. She came and visited me for my birthday in March. What a great person. :)
I wanted to take a portrait of her as I had just recently seen Aleksander Rodchenko's photograph Portrait of Mother, 1924. It was a sunny day and I wanted soft lighting so I set up a 4x6 white scrim 4 feet of the ground and I also stood 4 feet off the ground beside it, shooting at perhaps +2/3 exposure adjustment.
I'm not foolish enough to say mine even comes close to expressing as much as Al's does. His conveys an incredible depth of feeling, soul, simplicity, and without being over-bearing in sentiment. Thank you Alexander Rodchenko/Mother/Life for the inspiration.

Sandy Claws!

Recently the jolly ol' elf himself visited my place of employment. I happened to have lighting gear and my trusty 14-24 f2.8 and so decided to do some improptu (is that a word?) photo-portraitgram-ographies. Oh also, I recently saw Nightmare Before Christmas for the first time since I was 8 and it blew my mind! Ever-thing, but especially the lighting is perfect in that movie. Congratulations Mr. Burton, you've done it again.

October Drawings viii: Quentin Paint

Some people have said I look like Quentin Tarantino because we both have big chins. Ok. Fair enough. Plus WTF Lemmy was in Hawkwind! How did I not know this?

Zombie Ryan Colour

Tried some non-gradient colour for this. I think it turned out well. What I did was use a new layer beneath the lines for the colour. Perhaps some layer masking would result in a cleaner image. I guess I'm still learning to colour inside the lines!
